MUS-E ON STAGE
MUS-E ON STAGE improves the accessibility to music education and learning for primary school-aged children who come from underpriviledged and migrant backgrounds in Europe. The project involves at least 150 children from Portugal, Belgium, Cyprus, Hungary, Italy and Spain interacting with 15 professional musicians in face-to-face music workshops.
The project is led by the International Yehudi Menuhin Foundation and the Associação Yehudi Menuhin Portugal together with MUS-E Belgium, Fundación Yehudi Menuhin España (FYME), MUS-E Italia Onlus, MUS-E Hungary and MUS-E Cyprus.
CREATION OF A VIRTUAL CHOIR OF CHILDREN
Through the unique collaboration between the International Yehudi Menuhin Foundation and its orchestra in residence (the Brussels Chamber Orchestra), and the Associação Yehudi Menuhin Portugal traditional musicians, a music repertoire celebrating Portuguese musical heritage and diversity will be created and arranged. The music repertoire will be used to create resources for musical learning in schools and for the replicability in other countries, especially on one selected piece of music for the choir. MUSE ON STAGE promotes new tools for music teaching and learning and creates an additional music resources for supporting the MUS-E Network’s main goal: offer art and music activities in primary schools mainly located in lower income districts with few cultural stimuli and/or high concentration of diverse backgrounds.
Music sessions based on the project resources will take place in primary schools in Belgium, Hungary, Italy, Cyprus and Spain with the aim of creating a virtual choir. With a selected head of choir in each country, 150 will join their voices and sing a Portuguese song.
MUSIC RESIDENCY IN PORTUGAL
MUS-E ON STAGE also involve onsite activities with a 5-day music residency and workshops with children in Leiria in May 2021. Children from a local primary school will experience music education by taking part in the residency and in the music co-creation. Children will participate to the unique musical experience, alongside professional musicians from different backgrounds (classical orchestra music and traditional Portuguese music) as well as Celina da Piedade, a famous Portuguese composer, singer and accordeon player. These musicians will act as role models and children will be involved in the music-making, have a chance to discover a variety of musical instruments that are not usualy present in their daily life, experience the feeling of being part of a band/orchestra/choir, participate in the creation of a stage production and develop lifelong love of music.
The music residency will end with a live performance presenting the music repertoire and children will be on stage for the choir!
INTERNATIONAL CONCERT
In June 2021, it will be time to show the results of this beautiful project and broadcast the virtual choir of all the children involved accompanied by live musicians. This event will take place in Brussels as the culmination of the project and in the context of the Portuguese Presidency of the European Council.
