Agenda 2030: Article 5: Gender Equality
Goal 5 of the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda addresses a crucial goal: achieving gender equality and empowering all women and girls.
Fortunately, some primary goals, such as the right to equal education for men and women, have been achieved in Cyprus. However, much remains to be done on the path to true equality: stereotypes, false self-perceptions, and cultural and social pressures mean that from a very young age, girls are treated "differently," both by their peers and by society (how many times have we heard the phrase "be a lady, don't act like a tomboy"?).
Of course, although less obvious, the opposite is also true: a boy who loves dance risks being teased by his peers, because our cultural environment still labels this activity as "for girls."
Mus-e has been committed for years to combating these stereotypes and helping children, at a time when they are most sensitive to the judgment of others, overcome the system of easy "labels" and respect the choices of others without the pretense of classifying them as "masculine" or "feminine" cultural behavior.
In particular, Mus-e Cyprus fully supports goal 5:
We are convinced that art, in all its forms, can truly be a tool for equality, ensuring the overcoming of stereotypes and prejudices, along a path of true respect for others.
What are our goals for 2030?
- Constantly monitor, through quantitative and qualitative research, the indicators that measure the overcoming of discriminatory dynamics.
- Involve children's families more closely, to help them raise their children and overcome some cultural barriers related to gender.
